Police Abuses And Its Effects On Today s Society

In the past couple of years, phrases such as Hands up, don’t shoot and We can’t breathe have been shouted from the streets. Acts of violence and misconduct committed by the police have masses of people coming together and protesting the widespread problem. However, this current issue has been around for longer than Michael Brown and Eric Garner, two recent victims of police brutality. Offences from our police have occurred and were debated about for decades, but now are being brought back anew in these tumultuous times. Though police transgressions have an infamous place in history and a big part of today’s society, some still do not see it as that big of a problem. Walter L Scott was shot on April 4, 2015, after a routine traffic stop. Then, Freddie Gray died while in police custody in Baltimore in the same month. These are just a few examples of unreasonable deaths that are fresh in memory. Of course, there have been more deaths than those that make the news. According to Cop Crisis, 1,296 Americans were killed by the police last year, and 239 have already been killed this year. Some other statistics are that a quarter of those who are killed by officers are identified to be mentally ill. Also, Mapping Police Violence found that 98% of police offenders were not charged with a crime. Racism also plays heavily in police brutality, as African Americans are assaulted three times the rate of Caucasians or other ethnic minorities (Wong). These facts demonstrate that police brutality is nothing to be scoffed at, and public safety departments need to rebuild their policies in some way in order to solve this issue. “One Friday Morning” by Langston Hughes - 834 Words

â€Å"One Friday Morning† by Langston Hughes Racism and discrimination in general are things that are sadly practically inevitable. It is very unlikely that you ever will be able to find a society with no discrimination at all. Langston Hughes, who is an African-American writer, shows this in his short story â€Å"One Friday Morning†. Langston Hughes sheds light upon things like: The American Dream, equality and The Declaration of Independence. The story is written in the 1950’s which is at the same time The Civil Rights Movement just had been founded. Nancy Lee, the main character, is ‘proud of being American’. She undergoes a big development throughout the story. She gets introduced to discrimination and the fact that discriminate behavior and†¦show more content†¦It then comes like a shock to them when they find out that the committee has canceled Nancy’s scholarship, just because of the sole reason that she is colored differently: â€Å"She could not speak†. Nancy here disco vers the hard reality, that there are not just nice and good people in the North either. Nancy is very proud of being colored; she has even brought her racial identity into her own artwork: â€Å"She could see the old woman in her picture (really her grandmother in the south) lifting her head to the bright stars on the flag in the distance† (p. 6 ll. 14-16). ‘Bright stars’ is a symbol for all the good things in America and what America is known for like: liberty, equality, happiness and opportunity. Nancy’s painting shows three main things: â€Å"the flag, the spring, and the woman formed a kind of triangle holding a dream Nancy Lee wanted to express† (p. 4 ll. 6-8). The US-flag is a symbol of Liberty and equality, Nancy’s grandmother symbolizes an oppressed minority and the spring symbolizes a new beginning. Together I get the three to be a dream where the colored are equally treated and have the same rights and chances as anybody else. A prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principle upon which our government was founded Abraham LincolnOn January 16, 1920 the Eighteenth Amendment was ratified by thirty-six states and became part of the Constitution. The intention of this new amendment was to lower alcohol consumption by Americans. At the time each American consumed on average thirty gallons of alcohol a year.1 This new amendment took away the license to do business from the brewers, distillers, and the wholesale and retail sellers of alcoholic beverages. Alcohol consumption did taper off somewhat at the beginning of prohibition only to slowly rise back to pre-prohibition levels shortly before the end of the movement which took place on December 5,1933. Not only was the goal of prohibition never a chieved, but it raised organized crime to levels of power unimaginable before and seriously disrupted both the legitimacy and revenue of the government. Just as Prohibition incited many unsavory activities, so has the War on Drugs. The easiest way to show the connection between these to movements is an excerpt from an article pertaining to Prohibition in America during the 1920s:Bootleggers ran wild. Professional robberies began as soon as Prohibition did. Territories were divided by groups of organized crime that became the scum known as the Mafia. The territories were decided by violence and death, both against each other, as well as those in the public who may/may not have been innocent.2Extract a few words from the excerpt and replace them with the words drug dealers, War on Drugs, and gangs and there is a description of Americas current situation. The War on Drugs intends to rid America of drugs, hard and soft, just as prohibition attempted to rid America of drink. Just as the movement to rid America of al cohol failed, so will the War on Drugs because social engineering works no better today than it did then. The War on Drugs has given birth to many of the modern day evils. The most widespread repercussion of the War on Drugs is the crime rate.In 1990, the number of people sent to state and federal prisons for drug offenses exceeded the number of offenders sent to prison for violent crimes. Drug offenders currently make up 62 percent of the federal inmate population, up from 22 percent in 1980.3 Add to this the fact that most of these prisoners are nonviolent offenders put there under mandatory minimum sentencing laws and the explanation for why this country is running out of prison space should be readily apparent. The second most prevalent, as well as disheartening, result of this movement is the death of innocent victims. The support for this result can be found in the obituary section of the daily newspaper or on the five oclock news. Even the smallest of towns have been afflicted with death due to drugs. Back-alley heroin and basement-lab manufactured amphetamines present the same pr oblem as moonshine alcohol; it might be the real thing but it might also kill anyone who takes it because the manufacturer didnt know what they were doing. The huge profits from drugs are also the major motivation for turf wars between gangs, many of whom seem to have fairly bad aim and hit innocent bystanders as often as each other. To add insult to injury, the greatest backlash of the War on Drugs is the economic and financial damage. In the Cato Policy Analysis No.121 it states:A common estimate of annual black market drug sales would be about $80 billion.55 Because the black market price of drugs is inflated at the very least 10-fold over what the legal price would be , 90 percent of this figure, or about 70 billion, constitutes an economic loss caused by prohibition. That is, the drug user (and his dependents) is deprived of the purchasing power of 90 percent of the money he spends on illegal drugs without any net benefit accruing to the economy as a whole.56Since the War on Dr ugs costs fifteen billion dollars a year, it is hard to understand why the government is trying to eliminate and not take over an eighty billion dollar market. Drug Prohibition without a doubt has reaped no benefits and has escalated all it intended to conquer. The down side of drug legalization would be limited. Narcotics agents would be somewhat affected. The career description of a narcotics agent would switch from arrests and seizures to ensuring the quality of narcotics. The public would be made aware of drug use among American officials. Present addicts would most likely have a field day at first. He once spent a whole day meditating without food and all night without sleep, but found that it was better for him to learn. Confucius thought that education was very important. He has a section in the Analects dedicated to his own love of learning. Confucius thought that educating people was very important. He educated people not only by teaching them physically but also by teaching through his sayings in the Analects. One of the sayings from his Love of Learning section is as follows; Confucius said: Sometimes I have gone the whole day without and food, and gone the whole night without any sleep, giving myself to though. It was no use. It was better to learn. (Confucian Analects, XV: 30 pg. 23:15) He educated people on such topics as Humanity, Filial Piety, Rites and Music and perhaps one of the most important teaching of The Gentleman. This was a group of sayings by Confucius about how one man should act accordingly as opposed to how and inferior man would act in comparison. An example of his sayings on how the gentleman should act is Confucius said: The gentleman reaches upward, the inferior man reaches downward.' When looking from the stages view, you see the dance floor in front of you in the center of the room then left and right of the dance floor there’s tables and chairs for the guest. Switching up the costumes really showed that they are willing to except each other’s culture and background. Another way they shared their culture difference coming together is the performance they had. There was two small bands that each performed separately then in the end played a musical together. The first group was south African drummers that performed by playing the drums while doing tricks with it like doing flips while playing the drum or holding the drum with one foot while playing it. The second group was two Indian performers; one played an instrument while the other sang. Then in the end which was the last performance the Indian group played their last song and the African drummers joined in, combining their performance. This was a great idea to show the audience/guest that the combination of the two cultures can work on anything and do fine. All these mixes were all ways to express the type of people the couple is and how they can come together just fine without changing who they are and where they come from. After all the performance and dancing, it was time to set the ring on each other and cut the cake. Since they were still Americans the wedding kept the American tradition and had a flower girl and ring boy approach the ceremony to start it off. Then after the cake the guest help the bride and groom leave out of the hotel into their â€Å"just married† car. This was a great way to end the ceremony because they ended it by using an American tradition with the ring and cake and car. This states that even though they have different cultures and background that they still share their American culture side.

The Free Will Controversy Essays - Desiderius Erasmus, Free Essays The Free Will Controversy The Free Will Controversy Between the years of 1524 and 1527, Erasmus Desiderius and Martin Luther were tangled up in an interesting controversy (Bainton 187). This controversy surprisingly did not involve the authority of the pope, the nature of the church, indulgences, or any of the other practices that each man equally detested. It involved the philosophical topic regarding the question of free or enslaved will (Faulkner 171). Preserved Smith defines free will as the power to apply ones self to the things that make for salvation (348). This controversy was bound to happen for a number of reasons. First of all, Luther was becoming violent in his words and actions in general. Secondly, Luther made himself a target by his assertion in the Heidelberg Disputation of 1518. Luther's exact words were, Free will, after the fall, even when doing the best it can, commits a mortal sin. These two factors led Erasmus to speak out against Luther in De Libero Artitrio (On Free Will). Luther eventually answered back furiously in De Servo Arbitrio (On Enslaved Will) (Bainton 186-7). This was a superior work which explains to historians why Luther prevails in the end (Zweig 139). Erasmus was one of the most intelligent people of his century. Today however, he remains in the minds of most people as nothing more than another name (Zweig 3). In his time, he was the leader of all scholars in Europe from Germany to Italy and Spain and from England to Hungary as well. He stands above the other humanists and forerunners of the reformation (Schaff 402). His great mission was to bring back the spirit of classical and Christian Antiquity (Smith 33-4). Preserved Smith describes the first part of his life, specifically until 1524, as being progressive and reformatory; the second, until his death in 1536, he says was, conservative and reactionary (402). He is described as being somewhat of a nomad, never staying in the same place for more than eight years (48). Compared to his contemporaries, Erasmus did more than his share in preparing the church for the reformation (Schaff 402). Historians refer to Erasmus as the, illegitimate son of a Dutch priest named Gerard, and Margaret (Schaff 404). He was born in Rotterdam on October 27, in the 1466 or 1467 (Faulkner 30). He received his early education at Utrecht and then at Deventer where he began to impress people with his talents. Within him was a love was a passion for books and at the age of just 12, he knew Horace and Terence by memory (Schaff 404). When his father died, he was taken care of by three guardians. Their goal was to have him become a priest which gave them the power to rob him of his inheritance. They placed him in the house of the Brethren of the Common Life at Hertogenbusch. While there, Erasmus calls their houses as, seminaries of monasticism, and refers to their teachers as a, destruction to good intellect. They did not come close to destroying Erasmus's intellect. A few years later, his guardians convinced him to enter a monastery. He entered the Augustinian monastery against his will where he would spend five extremely unhappy years (Faulkner 323). After this, Erasmus went on to achieve his fame in doing the things he always wanted to do (Schaff 407-9). Despite the fact that Erasmus and Luther had many difference, there were ways in which they were similar. Both of them advocated a return to antiquity and an excitement for the golden age of Christianity and pagan Rome. They both had an interest in revolts against the mediaeval scholasticism. Another similarity lies in their child-hoods. They were both born into an era of individualism. Also, they grew up in cities that had recently developed in the same bourgeois class (Smith 321). Many differences between these two men led to their quarrel. Some of these differences were physical. Luther was the son of a minor. This along with his inborn energies made him the rougher of the two. Luther is quoted as saying, I gorge like a Bohemian and gulp down my liquor like a German (Zweig 132). Turkey on the other hand has a private and a more market based economic system where investment, production and distribution decision are broadly defined by market forces of demand and supply; with prices determined by these market forces. Unlike in social market economy where Rhine capitalism; where finance is more dominated by banks instead of stock exchanges, market model primarily depend on the willingness of the parties to transact.
